THE FIVE DEVILS
Swim instructor Joanne (Adèle Exarchopoulos, PFF22’s BLUE IS THE WARMEST COLOR) lives with her precocious, 8-year-old daughter Vicky (Sally Dramé) in a remote Alpine village. Already trapped in an unhappy marriage, Joanne is further disturbed by the unexpected arrival of her long-absent sister-in-law Julia (Swala Emati). An unusually sensitive child with a superhuman sense of smell and ability to recreate the scents of those around her, Vicky endeavors to figure out why Joanne is so unsettled by her aunt’s arrival by replicating Julia’s aroma. In doing so, Vicky is able to transport herself back in time, where she observes the tortured history of her mother, her aunt, and the forces that brought them together and drove them apart. Boasting a raw, unforgettable performance from Exarchopoulos, THE FIVE DEVILS inventively marries intimate drama with elements of the supernatural, making for an intoxicating and wholly original viewing experience.
