THE PASSENGERS OF THE NIGHT
When we first meet Elisabeth (Charlotte Gainsbourg), it’s the night of France’s historic 1981 presidential election. But the unassertive housewife is less concerned with the momentous events taking place outside than with the chaos inside her home. Elisabeth’s husband has just walked out, and now she must find a way to care for her two teenage children and hold onto their comfortable apartment. At her newfound job at a late-night radio call-in show, Elisabeth meets a teenage runaway named Talulah (Noée Abita, The Five Devils), and invites her to move in. The presence of this magnetic but troubled young woman sparks unexpected changes in the family’s dynamic, especially for Elisabeth’s smitten son Mathias (Quito Rayon Richter). As Talulah comes and goes from the apartment, THE PASSENGERS OF THE NIGHT sensitively observes the evolution of Elisabeth and her family over the course of an eventful decade. A highlight from the Official Competition of this year’s Berlinale, the latest from director Mikhaël Hers is a mellow charmer whose open-hearted optimism packs a genuine emotional punch.
