THE SMELL OF MONEY
For Elsie Herring, the stench of pig manure is an unavoidable part of daily life. Living on a piece of North Carolina land that’s been in her family for roughly a century, Elsie never imagined that a hog farm belonging to one of the world’s biggest pork corporations would end up practically in her backyard. But Elsie, no ordinary senior resident of her rural community, decides to fight against the revolting hog farm conditions — not just for herself, but for so many others who are suffering from the pollution to their land, air, and water. Elsie may not be armed with billions of dollars and a roster of slick lawyers, but what she does have in her corner is an undying passion for justice and a community of those equally unwilling to live in such deplorable conditions. The world’s climate crisis shines a further spotlight on such hog farms as the fraught legal battle ensues. The Smell of Money is told with compassion and urgency, showing the impact one person can have on their community and the world at large.
