BRAVO, BURKINA!
Join us after the screenings for a Q&A with filmmaker Walé Oyéjidé.
The vivid, magnificent designs that Philadelphia filmmaker and fashion designer Walé Oyéjidé has contributed to such acclaimed films as Black Panther not only celebrate a thriving cultural heritage, but also express a singular artist’s deeply felt vision. With his feature debut Bravo, Burkina!, Oyéjidé constructs a visually stunning, time-traveling meditation on lives not led through a sweeping, poetic epic about a Burkinabé man confronting the culture and family he left behind many years ago. As a young boy, Aimé flees the nation of Burkina Faso out of guilt, and years later finds himself as an artisan in Italy. The older Aimé explores the spellbinding Italian streets with a sense of longing and regret. When he encounters a mysterious woman, Asma, their serendipitous meeting opens up the possibility for Aimé to reconnect with his past life. The sweeping camera and arresting visual design create an enthralling lucid dream evocative of past cinema titans like Terrence Malick, yet Oyéjidé’s fantastic debut is a window into the future of filmmaking.
