EVIL DOES NOT EXIST
Ryûsuke Hamaguchi follows up his Oscar-winning DRIVE MY CAR with another slow-burn masterpiece. Takumi (Hitoshi Omika) lives with his young daughter, Hana (Ryô Nishikawa), in a small, serene Japanese town. Their intimate but thriving community relies heavily on the town’s direct access to a fresh, uncontaminated water supply. When a group of misguided urban developers comes to their town to propose the building of a high-traffic glamping site for city tourists, their plans threaten to throw off the community’s treasured ecosystem, effectively ruining the water supply and the residents’ livelihood. Stoic Takumi takes on the brunt of this emotional devastation, doing what he can to protect his daughter and his town. Hamaguchi expertly navigates through this emotionally fraught tale as he weaves together different layers and explores completely unexpected corners of the story. With a shocking third-act twist, EVIL DOES NOT EXIST gradually reveals the complexities of human nature.
