Writer/director/star Sylvester Stallone takes his signature character to the height of 80s excess in this deliriously entertaining entry in the Rocky Balboa saga. Once again the Italian Stallion’s in for the fight of his life, this time against the gargantuan Soviet boxer Ivan Drago (Dolph Lundgren) who – spoilers! – killed Rocky’s best frenemy Apollo Creed (Carl Weathers) in the ring. Against the urging of his eternally patient wife Adrian (Talia Shire) and all common sense, the Rocky packs his bags for the USSR to avenge Apollo, take down Drago, and maybe also defeat communism? Stallone, always a better filmmaker than he’s given credit for, avoids steering the franchise that made his career into self-parody by staying true to the enormous beating heart that made audiences fall in love with Philly’s favorite southpaw in the first place. ROCKY IV is the rarest of breeds: a sports melodrama jam-packed with action, tragedy, romance, pathos, high camp, Cold War jingoism, three back-to-back montages each more awesome than the last, a robot butler, Brigitte Nielsen, and one of the most thunderously spectacular boxing matches ever put to film.
