SISTER ACT
SISTER ACT
EMILE ARDOLINO | USA | 1992 | 100 MIN
What’s black, white, and chock-full of devotional reinterpretations of girl group favorites? Sister Act of course! Deloris Van-Cartier (Whoopi Goldberg) is a Reno lounge singer who’s forced to enter a convent after witnessing a mob hit. Though initially nun too happy at run-down St. Katherine’s Parish, Deloris soon finds her true calling with the convent’s choir, crafting zippy new arrangements and energizing her fellow sisters with the power of sweet, sweet music. Before you can say “uplifting musical montage,” the rejuvenated choir is filling the pews and attracting attention from parties both positive (Pope John Paul II) and negative (her murderous ex-boyfriend). Full of hysterical one-liners and rousing music, this habit-forming classic also features a delightful turn from national treasure Kathy Najimy and a master class in lip pursing from Dame Maggie Smith.
