An absolute joy, and alarmingly prescient, film about a ragtag group of Cold War leftovers, plus a smart mouth River Phoenix, uniting at the dawn of the world wide web to combat what modern society has not only now apathetically accepted, but invited: invasion of privacy. It is the year 1992 and amidst the burning embers of Cold War espionage, a new menacing enemy in corporate data mining has emerged to insight paranoia and panic. Only Robert Redford, and his team of “sneakers” (internet security hackers) stand in the way of complete loss of privacy and security. Redford is joined by ex-CIA spook Sidney Poitier, ex-convict Dan Aykroyd, and blind sound man David Strathairn, among others, to use every piece of 90s gadgetry at their disposal. But when Redford’s tech protest past catches up with him, the sneakers will have to work for the man unless they all want to become obsolete. Filled with smart quips and a charismatic, memorable team this side of Danny Ocean’s, SNEAKERS is a 90s classic that shows the humorous side to the brilliant Sidney Poitier’s often more serious screen persona.
Cast: Sidney Poitier, Robert Redford, Dan Aykroyd, River Phoenix
