PFF SPRINGFEST – MIKE WALLACE IS HERE
AVI BELKIN | USA | ENGLISH | 2019 | 90 MIN
Over half a century in television, Mike Wallace changed the face of broadcast journalism with his confrontational interview style and flair for the dramatic. But as this probing documentary demonstrates, there was more to Wallace than his pugnacious persona suggested. Both intimate and sweeping, Mike Wallace Is Here provides an expansive look at the evolution of broadcast journalism in a period of immense international upheaval. Wallace famously sat down with the biggest movers and shakers of his day, from Martin Luther King Jr. and Ayatollah Khomeini to a fresh-faced Donald Trump, and the film is a rich document of Wallace’s tumultuous times. Yet despite his no-holds-barred interview style, Wallace was a notoriously prickly interviewee, whose steely persona belied lifelong insecurities and a trauamatic personal history. Drawing exclusively on archival footage, director Avi Belkin has crafted a thorough and frequently surprising portrait of a man of often contradictory natures whose commitment to the truth remained steadfast.
