PFF SpringFest: CHA CHA REAL SMOOTH
OPENING NIGHT
COOPER RAIF | USA | 2022 | 107 MIN | ENGLISH
Falling into a gig as an in-demand party starter for 13-year-olds and their respective families, Andrew (filmmaker Cooper Raiff) appears to have it all. Yet the lucrative weekend side hustle filled with the likes of ABBA, Motown, and, yes, the “Cha Cha Slide” is more of a distraction from the recent grad’s post-college purgatory than a future career. After Andrew befriends dance-floor wallflower Lola (Vanessa Burghardt) and her single mother Domino (Dakota Johnson), the trio form a tight knit bond built on trust, friendship, and possibly something more. As Andrew obsesses over helping others, babysitting Lola, and making bar mitzvah-goers “slide to the left,” he begins to discover that he’s forgotten to take care of his own life. Multi-talented Raiff creates a universal, yet nuanced and honest portrayal of life in limbo that is unashamed to wear its heart on its sleeve while laughing on the dance floor.
Cast: Dakota Johnson, Cooper Raiff, Vanessa Burghardt, Evan Assante
