Following the film, NAVALNY, a panel of Philadelphia experts on Russia and Ukraine will will help contextualize the events of the film within the current political climate, speaking from their research and their own personal experiences of the region.
When Russian president Vladimir Putin refuses to allow the name “Alexander Navalny” to be uttered during his televised addresses to the country, it’s a clear sign that his greatest political opponent is winning. Director Daniel Roher intimately captures Navalny’s rise to fame via social media and his innate ability to connect with a divided population being force fed propaganda. Navalny traces the years leading to, and the fallout from, the much publicized assasination attempt allegedly ordered by Putin. After nearly dying, Navalny and his team’s investigation into the assasination attempt makes for one of the most electrifying and jaw-dropping documentary moments since Laura Poitras’s Citizenfour. NAVALNY offers an emotionally stirring, often endearing and always suspenseful story of a determined, charismatic man, his brave family, and his passionate supporters’ daring sacrifices to end decades of oligarchy and political corruption.
