PFF SpringFest: OLGA
ELIE GRAPPE | SWITZERLAND, UKRAINE, FRANCE | 2021 | 85 MIN | FRENCH, UKRANIAN
It’s 2013, and as protests against Ukraine’s pro-Russian government gain steam, 15-year-old gymnast Olga (Anastasia Budiashkina) is sent by her journalist mother to live in the relative safety of Switzerland. Alone in a strange and not always friendly new country, Olga throws herself into preparing for the upcoming European Championship. When conflict erupts in Kyiv, Olga can only watch the events unfold in grainy cell phone videos as she channels her fear and rage into her training. A remarkably assured debut from director Elie Grappe, OLGA is a vivid depiction of single-minded physical endurance and a timely exploration of Ukrainian national identity.
Cast: Anastasia Budiashkina, Sabrina Rubtsova, Jérôme Martin, Tanya Mikhina
