THE BIRDS
ALFRED HITCHCOCK | USA | 1963 | 120 MIN | PG-13 | ENGLISH
Part of the Philadelphia Film Society’s Film Essentials series.
After meeting charming young lawyer Mitch (Rod Taylor) in a San Francisco pet shop, headstrong socialite Melanie (Tippi Hedren) travels an hour north to the small, seaside town of Bodega Bay to pay him a visit with a pair of lovebirds in tow. But Melanie’s romantic schemes are thwarted by the bizarre behavior of the town’s bird population. This strange avian behavior quickly turns violent, and Melanie, Mitch, and the other locals must band together to survive the birds’ vicious attacks. Doing for bird-watching what he’d previously done for motels and showers in Psycho, master of suspense Alfred Hitchcock imbues a potentially absurd scenario with genuine, apocalyptic dread in this late-career masterpiece.
Cast: Tippi Hedren, Rod Taylor, Suzanne Pleshette, Jessica Tandy
What critics are saying:
“Might it (THE BIRDS) … stand as the essential Hitchcock movie, the purest and most confident, a brilliant distillation of the themes that had fuelled him ever since he sent the lodger creeping to his upstairs room?” – The Guardian
