On a dreary weekend morning, five high schoolers with nothing in common other than being in the same graduating class are thrown together in the Shermer High School library to fulfill their nine-hour detention sentences. Initially, personalities clash between princess Claire (Molly Ringwald), athlete Andrew (Emilio Estevez), brain Brian (Anthony Michael Hall), basket case Allison (Ally Sheedy), and criminal John (Judd Nelson). Supervised by the jaded Mr. Vernon (Paul Gleason), the teens are assigned the task of writing 1,000-word essays about who they are. Although it’s a seemingly easy question, each member of the group struggles to identify who he or she is outside of how others perceive them. As the hours pass by, their mischievous adventures give way emotional self-discoveries, and an unexpected bond forms between the motley group. This wildly popular film and hallmark of John Hughes’ career has become a touchstone of 80s cinema due to its extraordinary cast, mixture of comedy and raw emotion, and powerful message that has held up for decades.
