THE BROOD

DAVID CRONENBERG | CANADA | 1979 | 92 MIN | R | ENGLISH

Before his love affair with car crashes, insect metamorphosis, and exploding heads, David Cronenberg crafted a deeply haunting and terrifying tale of psychotherapy gone wrong in 1979’s THE BROOD. Inside the halls of the Somafree Institute of Psychoplasmics, controversial founder Dr. Hal Raglan (Oliver Reed) takes a particular special interest in patient Norah Carveth (Samantha Egger), a woman suffering from a lifetime of trauma and the recent estrangement of her daughter and husband. Dr. Raglan’s peculiar treatment results in the extraordinary physical manifestation of his patients’ emotional damage. As he continues to isolate Norah from the outside world, her worried husband and daughter begin to observe increasingly disturbing encounters with mysterious beings. Written amidst a divorce, THE BROOD is like Cronenberg’s own bloody and horrifying Kramer vs. Kramer with a shocking and memorable climactic ending to rival the greats.

Cast: Oliver Reed, Samantha Eggar, Art Hindle, Henry Beckman

Part of the Philadelphia Film Society’s AFTER HOURS series.
