PFF SpringFest – THE CHARMER
THE CHARMER
MILAD ALAMI | 2017 | Denmark | Danish, English, Farsi | 100 MIN
Cast: Ardalan Esmaili, Soho Rezanejad, Lars Brygmann, Susan Taslimi
Time is running out for Iranian immigrant Esmail (Ardalan Esmaili) to secure Danish citizenship before being forced to return to his home country. Handsome and well-mannered, he has developed a carefully practiced routine: every night, Esmail puts on his suit and heads to the same bar, hoping to meet and seduce Danish women. But when he meets (and begins to fall in love with) a young Danish woman from an Iranian family, uncomfortable memories of the life he’s desperately trying to leave behind are brought to the fore, threatening to derail his single-minded and desperate efforts to secure his ideal future. Laced with elements of psychological thriller and erotic drama, Milad Alami’s debut feature is an engrossing, disquieting look at the immigrant experience.
