THE COUNTRY GIRL
GEORGE SEATON | USA | 1954 | 104 MIN | NR | ENGLISH
It’d be easy to mistake the young Grace Kelly’s powerful performance as Georgie Elgin for a simple supporting role to the big screen supernova presences that are Bing Crosby and William Holden in the first act of George Seaton’s THE COUNTRY GIRL. Yet despite Crosby’s insecure drunkard Frank Elgin and Holden’s brazen director Bernie Dodd hogging the spotlight, Georgie emerges as the true heroine battling broken men and gaslighting around every corner. Famous for donning a more “homely” look, Kelly’s Georgie carries the weight of a past tragedy so that her husband Frank Elgin can play the leading role in Dodd’s new, “game changing” play (that oddly resembles OKLAHOMA!). Dodd begins to suspect that Elgin’s subpar performance at rehearsals and sneaky sips from the bottle are to be blamed on Elgin’s overprotective wife. But there is more to the woman hiding in the shadows of the backstage.
