THE HOLY MOUNTAIN
ALEJANDRO JODOROWSKY | MEXICO | 1973 | 114 MIN | SPANISH, ENGLISH
Part of the Philadelphia Film Society’s AFTER HOURS series.
Few films have sparked as much cinematic devotion, confusion, and outrage than visionary Chilean director Alejandro Jodorowsky’s 1973 bona fide cult classic The Holy Mountain. After barely avoiding a grisly crucifixion, a thief (Horacio Salinas) travels to a nearby metropolis and encounters shameless tourists and papal entrepreneurs before escaping to the sanctuary of a mysterious alchemist (Jodorowsky). There he learns of other humans, each personified by a planet, who must band together if they are to reach the mythical Holy Mountain and achieve immortality. But for many fans, the plot is secondary to Jodorowsky’s mind-bending visuals and freakily psychadelic images, including with toads, sex boxes, gold excrement, and more!
Cast: Alejandro Jodorowsky, Horacio Salinas, Zamira Saunders, Juan Ferrara
Part of the Philadelphia Film Society’s AFTER HOURS series.
Bringing together the odd, eerie, thrilling, and downright weird, this is the home of cult classics.
