The Philadelphia Film Society believes film has the power to generate awareness and empathy while stimulating change. To celebrate the strong, brave, impactful, and history-making women, we have created a non-exhaustive list of films and resources to help raise awareness and spark conversations among viewers.
FILMS
For Women’s History Month, Rotten Tomatoes is commemorating the work of women directors throughout the 21st Century. Their guide of 165 Best-Reviewed Movies by Women Filmmakers since 2000 includes documentaries as well as unforgettable narrative features.
STREAMING SERVICES
THE CRITERION CHANNEL
The Criterion Channel has created a collection of films directed by women. The channel includes The Films of Agnès Varda, DAUGHTERS OF THE DUST, and A NEW LEAF. Must have a Criterion Channel account to access these titles.
DISNEY+
The Disney+ created the Female Leads collection which gives you endless access to all the best strong female-lead movies, and shows including; A WRINKLE IN TIME, JANE GOODALL: THE HOPE, HIDDEN FIGURES, CAPTAIN MARVEL, and more. Must have a Disney+ account to access these titles.
HBOMax
HBOMax created a Yes She Can collection which allows subscribers to Celebrate Women’s History Month with formidable icons and unforgettable characters. The collection includes; BEASTS OF THE SOUTHERN WILD, BIRDS OF PREY: HARLEY QUINN, BEING SERENA, and more. Must have a HBOMax account to access these titles.
HULU
Hulu has put together a collection, Made By Here, with shows and movies that were awarded the ReFrame Stamp for having a gender-balanced production. The collection included; NOMANDLAND, BOOKSMART, SHIRLEY, THE UNITED STATES VS. BILLIE HOLIDAY, and more. Must have a Hulu account to access these titles.
NETFLIX
Netflix is promoting Movies Directed by Women collection to subscribers, featuring LADY BIRD, MOXIE, THE OLD GUARD, YES, GOD YES, and more. Must have a Netflix account to access these titles.
PRIME VIDEO
To celebrate Women’s History Month Prime Video put together the Women Who Dare collection which features movies and TV shows including; HERSELF, LATE NIGHT, BOMBSHELL, and more. All titles are available to rent and/or buy with a some titles available to stream with a Prime Video account.

Philadelphia museums and attractions honor the many contributions to society made by both historical and modern-day women all month long. Residents and visitors can celebrate with book discussions, artist Q&As, exhibitions and historical artifacts, both in-person at attractions like the Museum of the American Revolution and the National Constitution Center and online from the Free Library of Philadelphia and Mural Arts Philadelphia.

The Library of Congress, National Archives and Records Administration, National Endowment for the Humanities, National Gallery of Art, National Park Service, Smithsonian Institution and United States Holocaust Memorial Museum join in commemorating and encouraging the study, observance and celebration of the vital role of women in American history.
NATIONAL WOMEN’S HISTORY MUSEUM
An online resource, and future physical museum, that tells the stories of women who transformed the nation through exhibits and programs that educate, inspire, and empower while providing a complete view of American history. Current online exhibits include; The Women of NASA, Harriet Tubman, and First but Not the Last.
