A chilling dystopian thriller presenting a tense, deeply unsettling vision of society, Love Is the Monster explores the complexities of family and contemplates the moral question of how far a person might go to protect the people they love.
Set in the near future yet disconcertingly reminiscent of our contemporary times, a tropical dystopia is plagued by vast economic inequality and ruled by fear. With the society’s men departed for an armed conflict, the wealthy live in fear, hiding behind the walls of their gated communities. Their children are raised under armed guard, surrounded constantly by a caste of nannies, and disinfected at checkpoints. The inside of “The Perimeter” may be safer, but it’s still not the halcyon childhood that their wealth should have promised. Mirroring the uncertainty of the pandemic era, the increasingly adversarial nature of cross-generational relationships, and a global descent into repressive governance, Love Is the Monster is a potent and prescient portrait that depicts with clarity the acidic corrosion of base humanity when submerged in inescapable and extraordinary circumstances.
