BADGE AND RUSH LINE ONLY*
JAVIER CALVO, JAVIER AMBROSSI | SPAIN | 2026 | 155 MIN | SPANISH
Set before, during, and after the transformative Spanish Civil War, La Bola Negra is an operatic historical epic that tells the story of three men fundamentally connected by a shared history of love, loss, and inheritance across three distinct time periods: 1932, 1937, and 2017.
Referencing famed playwright Federico GarcÃa Lorca’s lost work—known by just a few pages and a title—La Bola Negra rethreads the legend of Lorca’s unfinished piece into a complicated and emotional triptych of loss, desire, and love. In pre-dictatorship Spain, Carlos (Milo Quifes) seeks to follow in his honorable father’s footsteps, only to find himself blackballed from his father’s prestigious social club due to whispers and assumptions about his sexuality. On the precipice of the Spanish Civil War, Sebastián (Guitarricadelafuente) is forced to confront both his ideology and sexuality when he is conscripted into the fascist army, where he meets and becomes infatuated with a prisoner of war. And in the near-modern day, Alberto (Carlos González), a struggling historian, must navigate his complicated family history, uncovering a family secret decades after the dictatorship has ended and claiming a unique inheritance that will shock the world. Together, the stories of these three men collide, weaving a stunning tapestry through time-hopping vignettes. Garnering Best Director at this year’s Cannes Film Festival, the Spanish power duo known as Los Javis (Javier Calvo and Javier Ambrossi) bring style and vigor to this deeply moving meditation on memory, love, and legacy, both for those who are remembered and those history tries to erase.
Cast: Guitarricadelafuente, Miguel Bernardeau, Penélope Cruz, Glenn Close
