JULIEN GASPAR-OLIVERI | FRANCE | 2026 | 105 MIN | FRENCH
The looming release of their troubled father from jail divides siblings Enzo and Carla, forcing the two to confront their deep-seated pain in Julien Gaspar-Oliveri’s evocative and powerful drama.
After years being the man of the house, lanky and still-childlike 19-year-old Enzo (an unbelievable Diego Murgia) is eagerly anticipating the imminent release of his father, Anthony, from jail. Despite his sister Carla’s (Romane Fringeli) staunch misgivings, Enzo is excited to show off his well-kept apartment, new girlfriend Roxanne, and burgeoning business hocking cheap wholesale goods out of his car’s trunk. Yet Enzo evades questions, if not outright lies, about his father’s whereabouts from Roxanne and her jovial family. Enzo’s projected internal and external life threatens to crumble when the gruff, steely Anthony (Bastien Bouillon) returns with his own plans for the future. Fraught with tension and exuding palpable compassion for Enzo, first-time filmmaker Julien Gaspar-Oliveri weaves a visually stunning and upsetting story about abused children of any age seeking approval from their most loved tormentors. Gaspar-Oliveri shrewdly documents Enzo’s strikingly cherubic nature through honest, close-up depictions of his face dotted with blemishes and zits, leaving nothing out of frame. With an extraordinary feature debut that establishes an exciting new voice in French cinema, Julien Gaspar-Oliveri is a filmmaker to watch.
