In this powerful Sundance top prize winner starring Channing Tatum and Gemma Chan, 8-year-old Josephine witnesses a brutal attack, leaving her changed in unexpected ways that her loving parents struggle to make sense of.

Josephine (brilliant newcomer Mason Reeves) accidentally sees a heinous crime unfold after she runs ahead of her dad (Channing Tatum, in a career-defining performance) in a park, subsequently altering the trajectory of her young life. At only 8, she is robbed of her innocence, and the once-safe world around her no longer feels manageable. With their daughter’s emotional well-being suddenly upended, her parents (featuring the magnetic Gemma Chan as Josephine’s mom) struggle to explain this impossible cruelty to their young daughter, who was the sole witness. Caught up in the turbulent aftermath of the incident and the uncertainty of the criminal case that follows it, Josephine begins acting out in erratic ways, often putting herself and her parents in direct danger. With no relief in sight, this fractured family tries desperately to heal as their safety and sanity continue to come apart at the seams. Anchored by a stunningly nuanced and mature performance from its young lead, this sophomore film from Beth de Araújo is an unflinching and entirely fresh perspective through the lens of a child forced to grow up too soon. As unsettling as it is important, it is no surprise that Josephine took home the two top prizes this year at Sundance, winning both the Grand Jury Prize and the Audience Award. This undeniably compelling film will get under your skin in the first 10 minutes, and it won’t let go until well after the credits roll.
