ELEANOR COPPOLA | USA | 2026 | 82 MIN | ENGLISH

Marie Antoinette turns 20 with a never-before-seen portrait of Sofia Coppola at work, captured through her mother Eleanor’s tentative gaze as the young director radically reinvents Versailles.

With the candor of a home video, Eleanor Coppola trails her daughter, careful not to intrude. She waits between takes to pull aside cast and crew, among them Kirsten Dunst and Jason Schwartzman, their faces still powdered white and hair styled in towering coiffures, as well as costume designer Milena Canonero, who crafted more than 70 original dresses for the film. Eleanor’s questions are simple, and though she is rarely on screen, her warmth puts those in front of her camera at ease, drawing out their passion and dedication to the film that would eventually provoke fierce debate. Two decades later, public opinion having turned, Eleanor’s loving point of view lives on among audiences who likewise connected with Sofia’s audacious vision. Diane Lane, longtime collaborator of the Coppolas, narrates Eleanor’s diary entries while more than 80 hours of her footage is posthumously fashioned together into an enduring keepsake of the then-34-year-old director and her reimagining of the ingenue Marie. Step behind the velvet curtains into Sofia’s revisionist 18th-century France, where candy-colored florals overtake gilded corridors and canvas Chucks are unapologetically paired with Saint-Huberty-styled Manolos, a defining expression of the auteur’s style.
