BADGE AND RUSH LINE ONLY*
MARTIN MCDONAGH | UK, USA, CHILE | 2026 | 118 MIN | ENGLISH
After a life of subterfuge and espionage, a retiring CIA agent (John Malkovich) is looking to be a bit more honest during a final dispatch to Easter Island in 1973, much to the dismay of his partner (Sam Rockwell) and bureau chief (Steve Buscemi) in Martin McDonagh’s sardonic dark comedy.
Despite their constant bickering and verbal sparring, longtime CIA partners Chris (John Malkovich) and his mentee Lee (Sam Rockwell) still share mutual respect. It’s a good thing, too, because respect goes a long way in a line of work where trust is never a guarantee. After a lifetime of dismantling powers across the globe in secret, Chris is preparing for the end of his covert career with plans for a grand memoir filled with intrigue and maybe even a few political assassinations. It doesn’t ease Lee’s nerves one bit that Chris has grown a little loose, regaling anyone willing to listen with grand adventures in Cuba or his exploits in Dallas in 1963. But after their recent efforts intervening in the newly established Chilean socialist government in 1973, a little R&R to Easter Island is a welcome reprieve for both of them. That is, until Lee gets a call from his irritable bureau chief, MJ (Steve Buscemi), to handle his chatty partner in the name of national security. Academy Award winner Martin McDonagh returns with another wry comic caper rife with conspiracies and regret about a not-so-distant past when the United States touted freedom and democracy as justification to exert control over countries. Like many of his celebrated films and plays, McDonagh’s patented quick wit and acidic dialogue find the perfect pair in Academy Award winners Malkovitch and Rockwell. Supported by a gleefully unhinged Parker Posey and a game Mariana Di Girólamo (Ema PFF29), Wild Horse Nine is another acerbic satire from McDonagh that utilizes the absurdity of our existence to expose a harsh, sober truth.
