STANLEY KUBRICK | UK, USA | 1968 | 149 MIN + INTERMISSION | ENGLISH | 70MM
Often regarded as one of the best films ever made, Kubrick’s mind-bending masterpiece explores the magnitudes of space, time, and existence, presented here in stunning 70mm.
An imposing black monolith; the vast reaches of space; past, present, and future; and a chilling portrait of artificial intelligence—these are only a few of the iconic things that make up one of cinema’s greatest achievements. Stanley Kubrick’s 1968 sci-fi magnum opus feels just as, if not more, relevant in today’s digital landscape. Keir Dullea stars as scientist Dave Bowman, who has been sent to Jupiter in an attempt to uncover answers after a strange, large black structure has been found. Also on the ship are fellow scientist Frank Poole (Gary Lockwood) and a supercomputer known as HAL 9000, whose stoic voice (an iconic voice performance from Douglas Rain) and sinister red glow are seemingly omnipresent. As the two scientists dutifully pursue their mission, it becomes increasingly clear that HAL might have a different objective. Suspicion increases as tensions rise, resulting in one of the most timely, chilling scenes in cinema history. With breathtaking visuals and impossibly complex special effects (which earned the film an Oscar), it’s no surprise that this film looms over every best-of list. Take the ultimate trip on the ultimate format, how it is meant to be seen: gorgeous 70mm on Philadelphia’s largest screen.
