ALEX POUKINE | BELGIUM, FRANCE | 2025 | 110 MIN | FRENCH
A highlight of this yearās Cannes Criticsā Week, French filmmaker Alexe Poukineās Kika weaves with grace through the romance, comedy, drama, and tragedy that befalls the filmās titular heroine. Compassionately played by Manon Clavel in a star-making role, confident social worker Kika finds herself on track for a life of typical, if not bland, domestic existence, until a meet-cute scenario right out of the Ephron playbook leaves her not only with a stomach full of butterflies, but also on the precipice of a life-changing decision that leads her to knocking on the local madamās brothel door for work. It would be to the detriment of Poukineās constantly surprising story of perseverance and Clavelās miraculously sly, but always electric, performance to divulge any more. Though it may be a story of confronting grief and surviving the worst, Kika never forgets that humor and a little bit of levity are the best weapons ā something our heroine must remember when life presents her with a literal bag of excrement. Donāt worry; sheās got this.
