Deeper in Dreams: A David Lynch Retrospective

CELEBRATE DAVID LYNCH

This year, the world said goodbye to a singular visionary, an artist whose fearless imagination reshaped cinema, sound, and the visual arts. David Lynch created worlds that were at once fascinating and unsettling, dreamlike and nightmarish, revealing the hidden paradoxes of human existence with unflinching honesty.

Through darkened hallways and suburban streets, beauty and horror, he gave us astonishing works of art we didn’t know we needed, and that we will never forget.

In honor of his extraordinary legacy, this retrospective revisits feature films, shorts, shows, visions, and more (with some surprises!) that defined his career and changed the way we experience storytelling on screen.

The barren, unforgiving desert landscape of Arrakis is a far cry from the burbling horror of Anytown, USA that permeates many of Lynch’s typical film settings. Yet beneath the shadow of the towering Shai-Hulud is a story of a young man named Paul Atreides whose visions of a violent, religious jihad in his name propels him reluctantly towards his fate. Filled with phenomenal production design and an inspired cast, DUNE offers the one and only glimpse at Lynch utilizing a large budget to realize his dreams.

In 1985, Peter Braatz got exclusive rights to document the making of the cult thriller BLUE VELVET by David Lynch. Most of this footage has stayed hidden until now. BLUE VELVET REVISITED uses Super 8 footage, sound recordings, photos, paintings, objects, and relics that Braatz collected during filming. These materials have been carefully edited into a new film, telling the story entirely through images created by the documentary’s author, Peter Braatz.
