PFF SpringFest – ON CHESIL BEACH
ON CHESIL BEACH
DOMINIC COOKE | 2018 | UK | English | 110 MIN
Cast: Saoirse Ronan, Billy Howle, Emily Watson, Anne-Marie Duff
Adapted from Ian McEwan’s best-selling novel, On Chesil Beach vividly captures the stifling social climate of England in 1962 by following virginal newlyweds Florence (Saoirse Ronan) and Edward (Dunkirk’s Billy Howle) on honeymoon at a quiet beachside resort. The two tentatively inch toward consummating their marriage in a series of sweetly awkward rituals, while flashbacks give further insight into how these two young people from different social strata managed to forge a strong bond. Handled with expert emotional precision by director Dominic Cooke and his two gifted leads, On Chesil Beach sensitively portrays both the suffocating inhibitions of a repressed era and the furious emotions rippling just beneath the surface.
