ARREBATO
IVÁN ZULUETA | SPAIN | 1979 | 115 MIN | NR | SPANISH
For the first time since its creation, Iván Zulueta’s 1980 drug fueled and sex charged cinematic nightmare Arrebato aka Rapture is finally being released theatrically in the US with a newly restored 4k print. After once again being unfulfilled during an editing session for his newest low budget splatter flick, José (Eusebio Poncela) receives an audio cassette from the pontificating and eccentric Pedro (Will More) describing their previous encounters with each other. Through odd, discomforting flashbacks, José, along with his addict girlfriend Ana, becomes enamored with the bizarre punk-rock allure of Pedro’s drug-addled musings on cinema. After his camera captures him asleep, Pedro wakes in a euphoric high and notices a strange phenomenon. It isn’t long before José too becomes obsessed with discovering what world exists between the 24 frames per second. Arrebato explores the psychological crossroads where drugs and cinematic obsession meet and counts Spanish master of cinema Pedro Almodóvar as one of its biggest fans.
