A beautiful oddity in the field of American cinema, Patrick Wang’s A Bread Factory is one of the funniest and freshest films to come along in years. Divided into two feature-length parts, it’s a mini-epic, broad in scope but fine-grained in its details. The film centers on the residents of the fictional hamlet of Checkford, and particularly on partners Dorothea (Tyne Daly) and Greta (Elisabeth Henry), who have operated an arts center called The Bread Factory for 40 years. But Checkford is changing, and it’s up to Dorothea, Greta, and their various friends and neighbors to defend art and integrity against the forces of commerce and gentrification.
In the second installment, actors at The Bread Factory are hard at work on a new production of Hecuba, but the real theatrics are taking place outside the theater. Checkford’s streets are overrun by strange tourists, mysterious tech start-up workers, and Dorothea and Greta are forced to determine whether the town they’ve fought so hard to serve is still interested in their work. Even more unpredictable and adventurous than Part One, A Bread Factory, Part Two is a remarkable exploration of the interplay between art and life.

“As thorough and thoughtful a statement on art and life as any American filmmaker has given us.” –Matt Zoller Seitz, rogerebert.com
