Wilkommen! Bienvenue! Welcome to the Kit Kat Club, where the girls are beautiful, life is beautiful, and absolutely nothing is off-limits. Bob Fosse’s adaptation of the hit stage musical (itself adapted from Christopher Isherwood’s semi-autobiographical stories) follows wide-eyed young Brit Brian (Michael York), who arrives in Berlin in 1931 and falls in with a decadent circle led by free-spirited cabaret performer Sally Bowles (Liza Minnelli). Sally headlines the Kit Kat Club, a seedy venue presided over by a sinister Master of Ceremonies (Joel Grey) and frequented by disreputable patrons more concerned with the threat of syphilis than with the increasingly violent and powerful Nazi party. But as the relationship between Brian and Sally intensifies, the real world threatens to invade their bohemian paradise. Despite starring the scion of Judy Garland and Vincente Minnelli, CABARET shares as much in common with its gritty, politically-minded, and sexually frank New Hollywood contemporaries as with the Hollywood musicals of yore. But Fosse and his mind-bogglingly talented cast still bring plenty of razzle dazzle to the film’s show-stopping musical numbers, which marry the director’s famously slinky style with a sense of nihilistic abandon.

“This viscerally powerful, deliriously inspired musical stands the test of time, and then some.” –The Guardian
