IN THE AISLES
THOMAS STUBER | GERMANY | 2018 | 125 MIN | NR | GERMAN W/ ENGLISH SUBTITLES
One of the breakout hits of the 2018 Berlin Film Festival, IN THE AISLES is the bittersweet story of introverted Christian (Transit’s Franz Rogowski), a tattooed misfit with a shadowy past who takes a job at a Costco-esque superstore. Under the tutelage of stern but supportive long-time employee Bruno (Peter Kurth), Christian struggles to master a finicky forklift, and learns the ropes of the store’s surprisingly complex hierarchy. He also strikes up an innocent flirtation with Marion (Toni Erdmann’s Sandra Hüller), a charming coworker from the Sweets Department whose playful demeanor belies a troubled home life. When Marion takes a leave of absence from work under dubious circumstances, the dark impulses that Christian has fought hard to suppress begin to bubble up. In his observant third feature, director Thomas Stuber confines most of the action to the cavernous aisles of the supermarket, capturing the moments of grace, humor, and humanity in this seemingly impersonal space.
