The hot, sticky climate of Mississippi has everyone reaching a boiling point in Norman Jewison’s groundbreaking Best Picture winner IN THE HEAT OF THE NIGHT. After the bleak discovery of a wealthy factory owner’s dead body in the middle of the night, a small town’s racist Police chief, Bill Gillespie (Rod Steiger), and his inept squad are found fumbling when they mistakenly bring in a visiting Virgil Tibbs (Poitier) under prejudice suspicion. Philadelphia’s top homicide detective, Tibbs bravely eschews the lingering threat of violence around him as his refusal to leave begins a dangerous descent into the hateful soul of a town to find the murderer at all costs. Though the film is famous for its evocative dialogue between Tibbs and Gillespie, Poitier’s powerfully complex and silent internal struggle filled with restrained rage is even more profound upon its viewing today.

Cast: Sidney Poitier, Rod Steiger, Warren Oates, Lee Grant
