This landmark of 1980s indie cinema is about the marriage of Sara (Seret Scott), a New York City philosophy professor preoccupied with the intellectual concept of “ecstasy,” and Victor (Bill Gunn), a painter on an artistic quest to rediscover his inspiration. The pair’s complex dynamic comes to a head when they rent a country house upstate. Funny, smart, and sensual, Losing Ground is a testament to the talents of playwright and filmmaker Kathleen Collins, who died in 1988 at age 46.
