OKJA
BONG JOON-HO | SOUTH KOREA, USA | 2017 | 121 MIN | NR | ENGLISH, KOREAN
In the year 2007, a seemingly fruitful economic achievement is announced by newly-appointed Mirando Corporation CEO Lucy Mirando (Tilda Swinton): the creation of a new breed of superpig. Ten years later, one of these hefty creatures, Okja, is named the best of the 26 original specimens and marked for breeding. But Okja’s loyal caretaker Mija (Ahn Seo-hyun) will stop at nothing to save her friend after Okja is taken to New York. A group of animal activists come to Mija’s aid, and together they attempt to take down the entire Mirando Corporation. Mixing masterful genre filmmaking with poignancy and political bite, Okja is a heart-wrenching film about loyalty and what it means to risk everything to follow what you believe in.
