A desperate father and his transgender son seek a new start when they set out for the Canadian border, with the boy’s worried mother and a concerned cop hot on their trail.
Invoking the rugged, adventurous spirit of classic Westerns but with a refreshingly contemporary point of view, this sensitive drama features a never-better Steve Zahn as troubled but loving dad Troy. Dismayed by the refusal of estranged wife Sally (Jillian Bell) to let their trans son Joe (Sasha Knight) live as his authentic self, Troy runs off into the Montana wilderness with Joe in tow. With the Canadian border in sight, Troy must contend with a variety of obstacles—both external and internal—in order to protect his son. Meanwhile, Sally enlists the help of police officer Faith (Ann Dowd), but as Faith learns more about the case, she realizes that this supposed kidnapping is something more complex. Winner of Best Actor for Zahn and Best Screenplay for writer-director Anna Kerrigan at this year’s Tribeca Film Festival, COWBOYS is a stirring portrayal of paternal love, a compassionate appeal for acceptance, and a tribute to outsiders of all stripes.
