EMA
The emotional fallout of a tragic accident sets the stage for Pablo Larraín’s electrifying and intimate character study of a professional dancer who aims to set the world on fire.
One of the most unique and exhilarating films of the year comes from the coalesced talents of celebrated Chilean director Pablo Larraín (JACKIE AND NERUDA, PFF25) and actress Mariana Di Girolamo, who delivers a ferocious, anarchic performance. After a tragic accident leaves her fraught marriage to modern dance choreographer Gastón (Gael García Bernal) in pieces, Ema (Di Girolamo) begins a rebellious journey of self-affirmation filled with lust, rage, and reggaeton. Backed by her punk crew of female dancers, Ema’s struggle for artistic freedom becomes a rallying cry for independence and a last attempt at redemption. As her intricate ploy to take back her life begins to ensnare more and more in her web, Ema must confront the unforeseen consequences of her radical actions. Larraín crafts an often painfully intimate tour de force with awe-inspiring dance sequences and tense marital battles set to its own, electrifying rhythm that work in tandem to propel Di Girolamo’s breakout performance into the stratosphere.
