THE HOUSE OF US
Struggling through her parents impending divorce, a young Korean girl takes on the role of parent in more ways than one in this beautifully drawn portrait from director Ga-eun Yoon (THE WORLD OF US).
During the summer holidays, 11-year-old Hana (Kim Na-yeon) longs to bring together her quarrelling parents and disaffected older brother by going on a vacation to the beach. She’s distracted by her mission one day when she meets nine-year-old Yoo-mi (Kim Sia) and seven-year-old Yoo-jin (Joo Ye-rim), sisters who are spending their summer largely unsupervised while their parents struggle to make ends meet at an out-of-town construction site. Lacking the family harmony she so yearns for at home, Hana takes on the role of protector and older sister to the two younger girls, and the three form a makeshift family unit. Together they embark on a memorable, bittersweet summer full of imagination, mischief, and adventure. Populated with stunning performances by child newcomers, auteur-in-the-making Ga-eun Yoon shows off her flair for capturing and sensitively presenting the complex emotions of preteens in this tale of one girl’s quest to define for herself what she wants family to mean for her.
