LAPSIS

NOAH HUTTON | USA | English | 2020 | 104 MIN

In this sci-fi satire set in a strikingly relatable alternate present, a man who is struggling to support himself and his ill brother takes a bizarre job in the gig economy field.

Meet Ray (Dean Imperial), an oafish middle-aged man struggling to make ends meet as he cares for his ailing half-brother, Jamie (Babe Howard). Jamie suffers from a peculiar fatigue syndrome known only as Omnia, which has no discernable cure. In an attempt to secure funds for Jamie’s pricey medical treatments, Ray sets out as a gig-worker for a ubiquitous cable-laying company whose workers rely on a social media-based point system for ranking and rewards. With reels of cable and a multifaceted GPS system in hand, workers spend their days and nights hiking through verdant terrain with one goal: finish your designated route before the automated cable-laying robots do. With the help of seasoned worker Anna (Madeline Wise, HBO’s CRASHING), Ray starts to unravel the grim realities of his new job. Equal parts economic satire and bleak social critique, LAPSIS is a wholly original and captivating look at an uncanny present-day society.

CAST: Dean Imperial, Madeline Wise, Babe Howard, Dora Madison
