ROSE PLAYS JULIE

Christine Molloy, Joe Lawlor | Ireland, UK | English | 2019 | 100 MIN

A young woman desperate to piece together her own history, seeks out her birth mother, who hesitantly reveals a dark piece of her and Rose’s past, setting them both on the path to reckoning.

Writer-directors Christine Molloy and Joe Lawlor return with their third feature ROSE PLAYS JULIE, a meditative and thrilling exploration of family, yearning, and revenge. After learning that she is adopted, veterinary student Rose (Ann Skelly) becomes determined to seek out her biological parents. Her birth mother had requested no contact, but Rose doesn’t let this deter her. Her birth mother Ellen (Orla Brady), a successful actress with a young daughter of her own, begrudgingly agrees to meet with Rose. When pressed about the birth father, Ellen gradually acquiesces, revealing a much darker truth than Rose had even guessed. Disguising herself as “Julie,” Rose dons a pageboy wig and surreptitiously introduces herself to her father, famous archaeologist Peter (Aidan Gillen, GAME OF THRONES). As Rose becomes more entangled in Peter’s life, she and Ellen grow closer when they band together to make a shocking, life changing decision.

CAST: Ann Skelly, Orla Brady, Aidan Gillen, Annabel Rickerby
