THE TIES

DANIELE LUCHETTI | France, Italy | Italian | 2020 | 100 MIN

The lasting effects of infidelity haunt an Italian family over decades as they learn past decisions cannot be forgotten, unless forgiven, in this emotional tour-de-force melodrama.

The marital vows that tie Aldo (Luigi Lo Cascio) and Vanda (Alba Rohrwacher, PFF27’s HAPPY AS LAZZARO) are frayed when Aldo admits that he has been having an affair. Shocked, Vanda attempts to hide her pain from the couple’s two children, lest they discover that their cramped Naples apartment is not a home of trust and love, but of betrayal. Daniele Luchetti’s THE TIES explores the destructive wake of this infidelity over decades and the effects it has had on an entire family. Spanning multiple eras, Luchetti’s film continues to follow Aldo and Vanda into their twilight years (played by Silvio Orlandi and Laura Morante, respectively) as a home burglary reignites Vanda’s resentment and distrust of her exhaustedly remorseful husband. With each new brilliantly acted scene, Luchetti meticulously maps the complex dynamic of a fractured family struggling to find what once made it whole. Hailed as the Italian MARRIAGE STORY after its Opening Night debut at the Venice Film Festival, THE TIES makes for a sobering yet explosive viewing experience.

CAST: Alba Rohrwacher, Luigi Lo Cascio, Laura Morante, Silvio Orlando
