COW
Following a captivating cow and her offspring, English director Andrea Arnold’s groundbreaking non-fiction feature immerses viewers in the world of animals like no film before.
Famous for capturing the conflicting spirit of youth in revolt, internationally acclaimed filmmaker Andrea Arnold (FISH TANK, AMERICAN HONEY) surprises with her most compassionate and arresting film yet in this year’s Cannes Film Festival favorite COW. Filmed exclusively from the low-to-ground perspective of its bovine stars, this sublime, experiential documentary follows the confined and limited routines of mother cow Luma and her newborn calf on a gloomy British farm. Harsh sounds of rusted machinery and unfamiliar human voices offer little solace for the two as they must navigate a world where their only purpose is to be a resource. Each mournful moo and piercing, soul searching look from Luma stirs empathy and immerses the viewer into a world never seen before in cinema. As Arnold’s keen eye marries astounding cinematography with her penchant for perfectly placed pop music, she builds scene by scene to develop Luma’s personality (projected or not) and provoke a sense of recognition in the viewer. Though the film could be seen as a rallying cry for animal rights, Arnold shrewdly offers little condemnation, allowing Luma’s experience to speak for the millions like her that have come before.
