LINGUI, THE SACRED BONDS

Mahamat-Saleh Haroun | Belgium, Chad, France, Germany | Arabic, French | 2021 | 87 MIN

A devoted Muslim mother appeals to the women of her community for help in securing an illegal abortion for her daughter, risking rejection from her religion and society.

A teenage pregnancy left Amina (Achouackh Abakar) disgraced and ostracized—expelled from school, shunned by her family, and abandoned by the baby’s father. Now 30 years old and a pariah, she’s resigned to a life of manual labor, peddling handcrafted stoves in the streets of Chad. A husbandless oddity, she suffers repeated reprimands from the local mosque leader and unwelcomed marriage proposals from her relentless older neighbor. When Amina learns her 15-year-old daughter Maria (Rihane Khalil Alio) is pregnant, she faces an impossible situation. Maria wishes to abort the baby, but abortion is illegal, expensive, and morally and religiously condemned. Yet, Amina doesn’t want Maria to suffer the same fate as herself. Despite the significant risk and financial burden, Amina is willing to go against her religion and the law to secure her daughter’s future. Will her wit and resourcefulness be enough to outmaneuver a labyrinth of societal complexities? Amina and a group of determined Chad women set out to defy a culture that denies them agency, creating a powerful portrait of women’s resiliency and persistence in pursuing a future of self-autonomy.

CAST: Achouackh Abakar Souleymane, Rihane Khalil Alio, Youssouf Djaoro
