MAYOR PETE

Jesse Moss | USA | English | 2021 | 96 MIN

Pete Buttigieg’s seemingly out-of-nowhere rise from obscurity to the forefront of American politics is tracked in this riveting behind-the-scenes campaign documentary from the makers of BOYS STATE.

Though he may have started out as the center of many jokes about his hard-to-pronounce last name, it didn’t take long for observers on both ends of the political spectrum to recognize that Pete Buttigieg was a force to be reckoned with in the 2020 Democratic primaries. But this ascent didn’t come without tireless work and strategizing, and this documentary from award-winning director Jesse Moss (BOYS STATE) goes deep behind the curtain, introducing viewers to the whip-smart team behind the campaign and offering an intimate portrait of Buttigieg and his husband Chasten as they grapple with what it means to suddenly be the most prominent gay couple in American politics. The film is one of the most revealing looks at a modern political campaign in recent memory, creating a vivid picture of what it’s like to live life under a microscope, with friends and foe alike scrutinizing the implications of every word and hand gesture. An admiring but clear-eyed look at a groundbreaking figure, MAYOR PETE renders recent American history in a fascinating new light.
