NIGHT RAIDERS

Danis Goulet | Canada, New Zealand | Cree, English | 2021 | 101 MIN

In this fast-paced dystopian thriller, a band of vigilantes fight to rescue Indigenous children from forced-assimilation schools run by the authoritarian government.

In the year 2043, war has devastated much of North America, leaving survivors to scrap for subsistence under the thumb of a heavily armed, technologically advanced military dictatorship. The regime considers children to be government property, putting them in state-run academies where they can be molded into subservient foot soldiers. Young Cree woman Niska (Elle-Máijá Tailfeathers) has been living in the forest with her daughter Waseese (Brooklyn Letexier-Hart) for years, but when desperation forces them back to the city, Waseese is taken by the authorities. Niska joins up with a group of Indigenous vigilantes fronted by fierce leader Ida (Gail Maurice), who are intent on breaking the young people out of the schools. While NIGHT RAIDERS may be set in the future, it draws an explicit parallel to the very-real residential schools of Canada’s past. Cree-Métis filmmaker Danis Goulet’s first feature film is an ingenious retooling of genre conventions, offering both expertly-deployed thrills and a thoughtful meditation on the resilience of Indigenous peoples.

CAST: Elle-Máijá Tailfeathers, Brooklyn Letexier-Hart, Gail Maurice, Amanda Plummer
