BROKER
Sang-hyeon (the always incredible Song Kang-ho of Parasite) has been leading a double life. By day, he plays the role of a hapless laundromat owner. By night, he runs an illegal adoption business with his friend and cohort Dong-soo, where the duo steal abandoned babies from a church’s dropbox and sell them on the black market to wealthy people in the hopes of finding them a better life. When the mother of their most recent acquisition unexpectedly returns to the church and catches them in the act, they persuade her to join forces and the trio hits the road in search of a suitable home for the infant, with two detectives hot on their trail. Perhaps the predominant filmmaker telling stories about the definition of family, Kore-eda brings his personal touch to this deeply poignant and often hilarious crime caper movie that breathes life and depth into each character. Gently realized and extremely engrossing, BROKER is a beautifully humane argument for the fundamental goodness of even the most flawed individuals, and for the beauty of chosen families.
