BROTHER AND SISTER
Prolific French auteur Arnaud Desplechin (PFF26’s ISMAEL’S GHOSTS, PFF28’s OH MERCY!) returns with a blistering family drama featuring two of France’s most acclaimed actors: Oscar-winner Marion Cotillard and Melvil Poupaud. Cotillard and Poupaud play Alice and Louis, bitterly estranged siblings whose years-long feud comes to a head when a tragic accident forces them into contact. Black sheep Louis has been channeling his familial loathing into unflattering memoirs, while successful actress Alice struggles to mask her simmering rage beneath a veneer of saintly calm. As the siblings’ newfound proximity hurtles Alice and Louis toward a potentially explosive confrontation, the tantalizing question remains: What brought about their animosity? Through flashbacks, Desplechin cleverly deploys details from the siblings’ history, illuminating their tangled relationship even as it grows increasingly fraught. What emerges is a fascinating, prickly, and often outrageous tragicomedy, brought to life by towering performances from Cotillard and Poupaud.
