ORLANDO
An international breakthrough for director Sally Potter and star Tilda Swinton, this beguiling, sumptuous adaptation of Virginia Woolf’s classic novel tells the story of a man who remains young and beautiful for centuries, even as his gender mysteriously shifts. When the film begins, young nobleman Orlando (Swinton) is a favorite of the imperious Queen Elizabeth I (Quentin Crisp). Before she dies, the queen promises to let Orlando keep his lavish estate forever, so long as he never fades or ages. And so, Orlando embarks on 400 years of blissful highs and heartbreaking lows, including a failed diplomatic mission to Constantinople from which Lord Orlando returns Lady Orlando. A visually stunning translation of Woolf’s cerebral source material for the big screen, Potter’s freewheeling and fluid look at gender has only grown more resonant and prophetic in the 30 years since the film’s release.
