THE INNOCENT
Abel (Louis Garrel, FOREVER YOUNG), is a melancholy widower and an incredibly protective son to his mother, Sylvie (Anouk Grinberg), an acting teacher for adult prison inmates. Much to Abel’s horror, he learns that his mother has not only fallen in love with one of her students, Michel (Roschdy Zem, PFF28’s OH MERCY!), but is also marrying him just before his release from prison. The release sends Abel down a comically paranoid spiral as he follows Michel around, convinced he’s still living an active life of crime. By his side is his best friend Clemence (Noémie Merlant, PFF28’s PORTRAIT OF A LADY ON FIRE), who quickly becomes charmed by Michel’s wit, edge, and keen acting sensibilities. Soon, Abel begrudgingly gets wrapped up in Michel’s newest elaborate heist. Directed and co-written by Garrel, THE INNOCENT finds tension, emotion, and familial fallout crashing together in this lighthearted but thrilling ride.
